Keepmoat Stadium 2, Doncaster Rovers
Sheffield & Hallamshire FA 1 – 2 Durham FA
Match Report by Chris Eyre
The Sheffield & Hallamshire FA Representative team, having already won Division One of the Northern Counties Youth Competition hosted a play off game against Durham CFA who finished runners up in Division Two on a very hot afternoon at the Keepmoat Stadium in Doncaster.
The Sheffield & Hallamshire team had not played together for nearly two months, and it showed in the first half as they were second best to a fast paced Durham team. If the Durham forward Kyle Morris had taken any of the three good chances he had in the first half, then the game would have been out of Sheffield & Hallamshire`s reach.
As it was they found themselves only one goal down at the break when James Cook hit in his teams goal, a simple tap in from the edge of the 6 yards box. In fact the only effort Sheffield & Hallamshire had in the first half was in the 44th minute when following a long run and a good shot by Ryan Ruddiforth, Liam Sandilands in the Durham goal brought off a fine save.
In contrast the second half was basically all Sheffield & Hallamshire. The manager’s half time pep talk and putting on substitute Lewis Carr for the injured Matt Thornton changed the game. Sheffield & Hallamshire now moved forward and attacked the Durham goal, with Carr being in the centre of most of the play.
Two further substitutions followed and it was these two subs that created and scored Sheffield & Hallamshire`s goal in the 75th minute. Tawanda Rupere’s penalty area cross was met by Liam Garrett who shot from 10 yards out giving the Durham keeper no chance of saving.
Both teams continued to attack and had chances to score. Adam Ledger in goal for Sheffield & Hallamshire did well to stop a well taken free kick from Alex Ryan at the second attempt and a good one two between Ruddiforth and Rupere saw Ruddiforth shoot just wide with the keeper beaten. The score after 90 minutes was 1-1 and so the game went into extra time.
Both teams pushed forward looking for a winner. This came in the 112thminute when a long cross into the area found Durham’s Kerry Hedley unmarked at the back post giving him time to place his shot past the Sheffield & Hallamshire keeper into the net. There were no further goals and so Durham run out 2-1 winners.
At the after match meal the Sheffield & Hallamshire FA representative team players were presented with their medals and Captain, Jake Currie received the Association of Northern Counties Youth Division One trophy from John Topping the Durham FA Company Secretary and Committee Member of the Northern Counties Youth Competition.
