Midfield man rejected interest from Blades

NEW Middlesbrough midfielder Mark Yeates has claimed he turned down an offer from Sheffield United before completing a £500,000 move to the Riverside.

The former Colchester winger was unveiled as Gareth Southgate's first major signing of the summer on Friday as the former England international rebuilds his squad following last season's relegation from the Premier League.

Yeates, who scored 21 goals in over 8-0 appearances for the League One outfit, said: "Bristol City, (Crystal] Palace and Sheffield United were all interested.

"But once I heard that Middlesbrough were in touch then there was only one place I wanted to go."

"The gaffer made it very clear how much he wanted me and that was a great feeling."

Barring injury or illness Yeates, who made a handful of appearances for Tottenham Hotspur after progressing through the ranks at White Hart Lane, is expected to face United when they travel to the north-east on August 8.

The 24-year-old's revelation should guarantee him a hot reception from the visitors and their supporters.

Blades fans travelling to Malta next week are asked to register their contact details with the club.

Blackwell's squad are travelling to the island – their major sponsors – on Monday and a range of free events is being organised.

United are offering budding footballers the chance to develop their skills at three summer soccer camps.

All are run by United's professional coaching staff and available to both boys and girls aged six to 13 years old.

Prices start from 15 per day and 60 for a full week per child.

The camps take place between July 20 – August 28 9.30am-3pm at United's Shirecliffe academy, Gym Plus sports centre in Crookes and Sheffield Works Department in Heeley Bank Road.
