With all but one of the ‘big names’ out, the draw for the semi-finals of the Sheffield and Hallamshire FA Senior Cup tomorrow guarantees that at least one club which has never been there before will have a a date in the prestigious Hillsborough final of this showpiece competition.
Only Frickley Athletic, the holders, remain of the top four ranked clubs in the County FA’s senior knockout competition - Stocksbridge Park Steels, Sheffield FC and Worksop Town all fell at the third round stage.
Athersley Rec, Worksop Parramore and the lowest-ranked club left, County Senior League leaders Oughtibridge, are also in tomorrow’s draw and none of them have been in this final before.
Athersley and Parramore, both from the Premier Division of the Toolstation N.Counties East League, have been responsible for two of those ‘big boys’ going out.
Athersley had a fantastic 5-3 win over Worksop Town. Parramore pulled off a superb 3-1 win at Stocksbridge.
Meanwhile, in the quarter-finals, Oughtibridge pulled off a cup surprise when they went to NCEL side Parkgate and won 2-1.
Frickley, in the Evo-Stik League’s Premier Division, won a thrilling final 4-3 against Sheffield FC last May.
Parramore and Athersley have been on the rise in recent seasons, Parramore being in their second season in the NCEL’s Premier Division whilst Athersley are in their first season in the top flight having gained promotion in their first season in the league.
Oughtibridge lead the County Senior League Premier Division by ten points, having played five games more than Handsworth.
