It ain’t over til it’s over
The 11pm deadline failed to stop Sheffield Wednesday from sneaking through their fourth new signing of deadline day.
The Owls signed Portuguese midfielder Melo on a three-and-a-half year contract, a deal confirmed a full 36 minutes after the closing of the window.
The winter transfer window is closed for another year and it has proved to be a storied one for half of our six clubs across South Yorkshire and North Derbyshire.
Sheffield Wednesday have been predictably busy thanks to their new-found wealth with three new arrivals at Hillsborough. And they may not be done just yet.
The deadline may have passed but there could still be time for Wednesday to get a deal through.
The biggest local story of the day was fully concluded late on with Eoin Doyle now on Cardiff’s books after signing a three-and-a-half year deal on his ‘seven-figure’ switch from Chesterfield.
Doyle was Sheffield United’s prime target but they had to be content with signing Rochdale’s Matty Done.
The Spireites responded well by bringing in four players in the aftermath of Doyle’s departure.
Rotherham United boss Steve Evans failed to secure any of his transfer targets.
As for Doncaster and Barnsley, it was a deathly quiet deadline day.

Stuart Gray had a freshly-boosted transfer kitty and he wasn’t afraid to use it.
The Owls head coach has splashed the cash on four players on deadline day with the signing of Portuguese midfielder Filipe Melo from Moreirense the latest deal to go through.
First Gray snapped up striker Sergiu Bus from CSKA Sofia for an undisclosed fee, believed to be in the region of £375,000 before add-ons. Bus - who was the top scorer in the Bulgarian A Grupa - has signed a three-and-a-half year deal. Read more: click here
And Gray doubled up by bringing in defender Marnick Vermijl from Manchester United. Vermijl – primarily a right back but a defender who can operate across the back line – has signed a three-and-a-half year contract. Read more: CLICK HERE
After a tense month of waiting, Gray finally got his man in Lewis McGugan, a player he has said all along was one he would love to bring back to the club. Read more: McGugan rejoins on loan
Gray also handed a contract extension until the end of the season to defender Dejan Kelhar, who has yet to feature for the Owls due to a knee ligament injury suffered in pre-season.
One out-going from Hillsborough today has seen Caolan Lavery join Chesterfield on loan until March 7 while Mani Dieseruvwe has gone to the Spireites on a permanent deal.

Sheffield United finished their work for the window after completing their deal for Matty Done on an undisclosed fee.
But that has left them without a striker, which has seemingly been Nigel Clough’s priority throughout January.

Steve Evans has been a busy boy during January - and while working hard today, he has not managed to get the job done.
The Millers boss wanted two more players in before tonight’s 11pm deadline but failed in his enquiries.
Evans said: “During the course of the last week we have made two significant offers for players and despite increased offers over the weekend both deals have failed to materialise.
“Having met with the Chairman, Vice Chairman and Chief Operating Officer this evening I have come to the conclusion that we will not be adding to the squad prior to the 11pm deadline this evening.
“We must all remain mindful that the emergency loan market opens in a week and should we need injury cover and in the event that the right player becomes available, we will be in the position where by we can move very quickly.”
Evans had been interested in St Mirren attacking midfielder Kenny McLean, who he watched last Saturday. But McLean agreed to join Aberdeen.
And the Millers were one of a plethora of sides interested in Eoin Doyle during January.
“You never know.”
That was Paul Dickov’s response to questions about his intentions for transfer deadline day.
But in the end it turned out to be a playful tease by the Rovers boss who seemingly had no intention of carrying out any deadline day business.
And he told our reporter after Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Chesterfield that the current make-up of the Rovers squad is the strongest he has had during his season-and-a-half spell in charge.
The Reds had hoped their long pursuit of Port Vale striker Tom Pope would come to a successfiul conclusion on deadline day.
But boss Danny Wilson gave up hope first thing this morning and that was the end of Barnsley’s efforts.
One piece of business Wilson did carry out was extending George Waring’s loan deal from Stoke City. And Wilson has also revealed he would like to extend Ben Pearson’s loan from Manchester United. Read more: Waring agrees Reds stay and Wilson targets Pearson extension
There was only ever going to be one major talking point for the Spireites today - Eoin Doyle.
And the inevitable seems to have happened after Chesterfield revealed they had agreed a deal to sell the striker to Cardiff City for an undisclosed seven-figure sum. It’s not done yet but it would be a surpirse if the deal collapsed at this point.
Doyle is on his way to a medical before the deal is agreed but his departure is now a foregone conclusion. Read more: Chesterfield accept Cardiff’s bid for Doyle
Attention for Spireites boss quickly turned to finding a replacement for Doyle and he landed Sheffield Wednesday striker Caolan Lavery on loan until March 7. Read more: Chesterfield sign Lavery
And he quickly doubled up his raid on the Owls by signing Mani Dieseruvwe on a permanent deal. Dieseruvwe was on loan with the Spireites but with his contract at Hillsborough set to expire in the summer, the Owls allowed the striker to join on an 18-month contract.
Cook also brought in winger Mark Duffy and defender Ashley Carter who both join on loan. Former Doncaster Rovers midfielder Duffy has signed on a one-month loan from Birmingham while Wolves defender Carter has agreed a youth loan for an initial 28 days. Read more: Spireites sign Duffy and Carter
