Doncaster Rovers boss Dean Saunders is livid over a challenge that may keep James Coppinger out for the season.
He alleged Coppinger was headbutted in today’s 2-1 defeat at Bristol City.
Coppinger suffered a suspected fractured cheekbone and ended up in hospital.
Later the club said the player has been released after the injury had been confirmed as a cheek fracture.
“He will return home with the team” said a spokesman,
City moved six points clear of the Championship relegation zone after seeing off 10-man Doncaster.
First-half goals from Chris Wood and Kalifa Cisse helped the Robins bounce back from successive defeats to Crawley in the FA Cup and Brighton in the league.
However, they were made to hang on at the end as, despite Habib Beye’s first-half disputed dismissal for a poor challenge on Cole Skuse shortly before the hosts doubled their lead, El-Hadji Diouf’s header 15 minutes from time set up a nervous finale.
But afterwards it was Coppinger’s condition that provided the biggest talking point.
