GOALKEEPER Steve Hernandez bagged a brace of trophies at Askern Villa’s annual presentation evening.

Hernandez was manager Brian Johnston’s player of the season and also the players’ player of the season.

“Steve was outstanding, turning in some brilliant performances,” said club secretary Dave Hall.

“He never missed a training session and is a popular member in the dressing room. Steve also showed loyalty to the club by turning down a move to Staveley Miners Welfare.”

Assistant manager Mark Vickerage won the award for top scorer.

Vickerage, who has finished the club’s top scorer in five of the last six seasons, called upon the rest of the players to step up to the plate after receiving his award.

“I want someone to beat me next season,” he said.

Craig Aspinall won the Under-19s Manager’s player of the season award.

Steve Garner picked up the players’ player of the Season. Danny Wilton was the top scorer.

Both Craig and Steve played in the first team and towards the end of the season were pushing for regular positions in the starting line-up.

Jay Rollins was named the club’s most improved player of the season.

The 16-year-old had an outstanding season and attracted attention from several professional clubs.

He was brought on steadily by manager Johnston through last season.

He featured on the bench until becoming an automatic choice for the first team in the last couple of months of the season.

Ian Tallentire proved a popular winner of the clubman of the year award.

“Ian works tirelessly for the club doing various tasks such as kitman, helping down at the ground and fundraising and giving up many hours for the club,” said Hall.

Villa are looking to recruit more players to play in next season’s Northern Alliance Under-19s League.

Players interested in playing for the team, which plays its games in midweek, must be over 16 but under 19 before August 31

“We have a good record in recent years of bringing through good quality footballers from the youth ranks into the first team,” said Hall.
