CONFIRMATION that Howard Webb has stayed at the top of his refereeing game has come with his selection to officiate at next year’s European Championship Finals.
“It’s always wonderful to be involved at a major tournament, it’s what we all strive for,” said Howard who, of course, was in charge of the 2010 World Cup Final.
“On the back of the World Cup, which was massively successful, to be selected again is, I feel, a real achievement because it shows I have maintained my standards and my motivation.
“When you get to the very top, it is difficult to stay there, so to be picked again is a thrill and an honour.
“I am certainly looking forward to it,” added Howard who refereed at the last European Championships in 2008.
Howard has recently returned from Brazil, venue of the next World Cup finals in 2014, where he officiated at a special legends tournament.
“I’ve just been at two football grounds currently under construction, Rotherham United’s New York Stadium and the new Maracana and hope I will one day be out in the middle at both when they’re completed,” added Howard who was “presented” with a souvenir piece of concrete brickwork from the ‘old’ Maracana Stadium.
