SHEFFIELD Hallam University beat the University of Sheffield 1-0 to conclude the city’s Varsity 2012 challenge.

More than 4,500 students watched the match at Hillsborough, with Charlie Weir’s goal deciding the overall outcome of the varsity.

The victory for Hallam gave them a 32-31 overall win to retain the title for the 10th consecutive year. However, there was plenty to do for match referee Howard Webb as he sent off Jack Cripps a University of Sheffield player.

Webb, who has received an honorary degree from Sheffield Hallam and was in charge for the World Cup final in 2010 between Spain and Holland, had his usual excellent match.
