SOUTH Yorkshire has the fifth highest number of grassroots girls’ football in the UK.
There are 142 teams in the Sheffield & Hallamshire FA area, slightly behind West Riding, Berks & Bucks, Lancashire and the top local FA, Birmingham. The game is more popular than ever, with registered girls’ teams increasing in the past ten years by 15% in England, 27% in Wales and the number of female players in Scotland rocketing by 97%. The picture isn’t quite as rosy for Sheffield adult teams though.
