Saido Berahino saved England Under-21s’ blushes against Finland last night in a match which saw captain Andre Wisdom sent off and goalkeeper Jack Butland caught out for the opening goal.
It was an eventful second game in charge for new Young Lions boss Gareth Southgate, whose first game at the helm ended in a 1-0 win over minnows Moldova last week.
Berahino netted that night and was on the scoresheet again in Tampere, grabbing a second-half equaliser in a European Championship qualifier that did not go to plan.
Sheffield United goalkeeper George Long wasn’t named in the squad with Southgate preferring Watford’s Jonathan Bond as his back-up to Butland.
Meanwhile, in Sligo, Ireland, Long’s colleague Sean McGinty was part of the Republic of Ireland under 21 team beaten 4-0 by Germany. The visitors goals werefrom Moritz Leitner, Kevin Volland (2) and Philipp Hofmann.
