Manchester United are on the verge of signing a new ‘surprise’ striker – but boss Louis van Gaal has refused to reveal the identity of the mystery man. “He’s in the process,” Van Gaal said. “It’s not the striker that the media has written about. You have to wait and see.” (Sky Sports).

Liverpool are likely to be disappointed in their attempts to make Borussia Dortmund’s Marco Reus, 26, their record £46m signing, with Real Madrid now set to beat them to the German international’s signature. (Liverpool Echo).

Chelsea will press ahead with a fresh £26million bid for John Stones despite a growing row with Everton which continued on Monday night. The champions have already had a £20m offer rejected, but dispute a claim that they were told categorically in a letter that Stones is not for sale. (Daily Mirror)

Manchester United do not wish to allow Jonny Evans to leave until they have another centre back lined up. They are still keen on making a breakthrough in talks for Real Madrid’s Sergio Ramos but are unlikely to pursue Nicolas Otamendi from Valencia, despite being offered the Argentine. (Daily Mail).

Chelsea have agreed to sell defender Filipe Luis back to Atletico Madrid, according to Sky sources. The left back arrived at Stamford Bridge one year ago from Atletico for £15.8m and is returning to the Spanish capital for around £800,000 less (Sky Sports).

New Leicester City boss Claudio Ranieri is pleading with Argentinian midfielder Esteban Cambiasso to return to the club.
