The introduction of a female basic referee course by Sheffield & Hallamshire FA has proved a huge success with almost every place being filled. Seventeen females started the course at the weekend (13th March 2011) showing the demand for the female only course option.

The addition of this one course will lead to a 70% increase of female referees within the county. This is a notable step towards gaining targets set by the County FA’s Strategic Plan to help sustain and develop Girls and Women’s football within the region, not just for players but for everyone. Following the success of this course a further four are planned across the Sheffield & Hallamshire County FA region during 2011.

Gemma Gale, Girls and Women’s Development Officer for Sheffield & Hallamshire FA commented: “After listening to the views of women involved in grassroots football, the course is intended to draw more females into refereeing by providing an environment which is not male dominated.

“Gender should not be the main factor determining the quality of a referee. Players want to be refereed by competent fair and quality referees, whether they are female of male shouldn’t be an issue.” The course is led by FA qualified referee tutors, John Etheridge and Gary Skiffington who will deliver basic refereeing skills and theory as well as carrying out a range of practical assessments.

Sheffield & Hallamshire FA encourages all females to consider the benefits of becoming a player, FA qualified referee or coach as the female game advances and grows. The County FA welcomes the Women’s FA Super League and Women’s World Cup 2011 as perfect opportunities for females to take inspiration and book onto our female courses.
