Rovers value Mills at £2.5m
DONCASTER Rovers will turn over a handy profit if they decide to cash in on defender Matt Mills this summer.
Rovers have already rejected at least one 1.5 million offer for the 22 year-old centre-back who cost them just 300,000 12 months ago.
And they seem to be in no hurry to part company with their record buy judging by chairman John Ryan's response this week to reports that Nottingham Forest are prepared to top Birmingham City's bid earlier this year.
Forest are reported to be poised to make a bid of around the 2m mark for the former Manchester City defender in the next few days.
Ryan told The Star this week, that contrary to reports, Forest had not made an official approach for Mills.
Ryan has always maintained that every player has his price and said that the club would consider any offer to come in for Mills.
He declined to publicly put a price on Mills' head – though reports suggest that if Birmingham's 1.5m offer in the January transfer window had not been based on lengthy stage payments the deal would have gone through.
It seems, however, that Rovers' valuation is now nearer 2.5m.
That could be viewed as a way of scaring off interested parties and increasing the chances that Mills will still be a Doncaster player at the start of next season.
Rovers have always made it clear that they wouldn't stand in the way of a player wishing to better himself if a big club comes in for him - and the price is right.
But Ryan, for one, doesn't view Forest as currently being a bigger club, generally, than Rovers – although he admits that they are in terms of attendances.
He is also possibly reluctant to sell Mills to a rival Championship club. Particularly as Mills had an outstanding season for Rovers.
His partnership with 21 year-old Sam Hird shows great potential and Rovers boss Sean O'Driscoll, whilst conceding that there is still room for improvement, would be reluctant to break it up.
Mills proved very much the senior partner – though Hird came on in leaps and bounds – for much of the season, catching the eye in the air in both boxes and with his distribution.
