Final bid for mills

NOTTINGHAM Forest will make one final attempt to lure Matt Mills away from Doncaster Rovers.

The former Manchester City defender was the subject of a bid - said to be in excess of 2 million by John Ryan - last week only for the Rovers chairman to reject their approach.

But Billy Davies, Forest's manager, is known for his persistence in the transfer market, with sources in the Midlands suggesting he is contemplating another attempt to capture the coveted centre-half.

Having released veteran Ian Breckin, Davies is keen to add greater depth to the heart of his back four and views Mills as the perfect addition to a squad which avoided relegation in May.

Ryan, however, has proved equally obstinate and, Forest's decision to enter the race for Blackpool's former Rotherham United defender, Shaun Barker, suggests they are not confident of signing the 22-year-old.

Birmingham City's presence - their boss, Alex McLeish, regards Mills as a possible alternative should Roger Johnson remain with Cardiff - has complicated the issue further.

Meanwhile, Doncaster-born striker Danny Rose made his full debut for England under-21's against Germany last night.

The youngster, who progressed through the ranks at Leeds before joining Tottenham Hotspur, earned praise from coach Stuart Pearce ahead of Friday's European Championship semi-final.

Speaking after last night's draw with Germany, which confirmed England's place at the top of their qualifying group, Pearce said: "I wouldn't swap my squad of players for any other nation's in Europe.

"Winning the European Championship was the plan two years ago, and nothing has changed my mind now. If we don't focus from game to game we'll go home, and if we give a good account of ourselves, play to the best of our ability and all the players contribute from one to 23, we'll have half a chance.

"We've got no injuries."
