THE name’s Brian, Brian Flynn.
And Doncaster Rovers have a licence to thrill.
Former wingman Flynn has wasted no time at all in making his own mark on his team’s forward play.
The man with the golden opportunity to take Rovers back to the Championship has told the club’s attacking players to relax and enjoy themselves on the pitch.
He told The Star his managerial mantra is to let attacking players ‘express themselves’.
“I have my own subtle ways of trying to make things better,” said Flynn.
“I like players to express themselves.
“What I say to the players is you’ve got a licence to thrill.
“When players hear that they will try things. And when they try things and they come off, it’s always better for the team.
“I like players to express themselves within the framework of the team,” he added.
“The team always comes first.
“But I like forward players to try and make things happen. I like that a lot.”
Flynn’s first permanent game in charge, a comfortable 2-0 win over Leyton Orient, certainly did thrill supporters.
Rovers produced arguably their most complete home performance of the season, rivalling the 4-0 destruction of Scunthorpe United, and particularly impressed fans with their fluency and flair in the final third.
Playmaker James Coppinger revelled in the hole behind Chris Brown having replaced an injured Iain Hume, David Syers regularly broke forward from midfield, and even anchorman Paul Keegan adopted a shoot on sight philosophy.
The end result was that Doncaster looked more dynamic in the attacking third than they have done previously at the Keepmoat Stadium this term.
Flynn, however, was keen to downplay the inevitable comparisons with Rovers under Dean Saunders.
“There was nothing wrong with the style under Dean, but it’s pleasing to hear the fans enjoyed it against Orient,” said Flynn.
“I’ve only seen three home games this year, so I can’t be a judge of the home form.
“I remember Dean making the public statement ‘let’s start to get the fans excited at the Keepmoat’ though.
“So I know it was something he was keen to do.”
Flynn has a pleasant selection dilemma, particularly in attacking areas, this weekend when Rovers return to action at Bury on Saturday.
Billy Paynter will return from a three-game suspension, while Hume is expected to be fit again after missing the win over Orient with a calf strain.
However, Rovers’ boss has already hinted that the players in possession of the shirt will retain their place in the side at Gigg Lane.
