DONCASTER Rovers have made an urgent plea for supporters to back the club following yesterday’s resignation of four directors.
Chairman John Ryan admitted today the club needed new financial backing following the departure of multi-millionaires Dick Watson and Terry Bramall and Watson’s children Andrew Watson and Sarah Kell.
Rovers are making no official statement on the situation but media manager Steve Uttley has urged fans to turn out in their numbers for the club’s next home game against Reading on Saturday week and to make their presence felt.
The club, battling to maintain their Championship status, have been hit by the relegation of such as Sheffield United and Scunthorpe United and only two games - West Ham United and Barnsley - have topped the 10,000- plus breakeven figure.
“Gates have been disappointing and if we were to pull in an extra couple of thousand every week that would go someway to help the situation,” said Uttley.
“We need the fans to turn up and prove to John that they care about the club. We also need fans to be positive; there has been too much negativity from some sections.”
The Star understands that the club are under no financial pressure to sell any of their players this season and that there will be no fire sale.
The ‘Willie McKay experiment’ of bringing in players from overseas on modest short-term contracts to both boost playing resources and hopefully to capitalise financially if they are then sold on, is also likely to be unaffected by the board changes.
Supporters, of course, will be worried what lies in store for the club, not only this season but next and beyond.
They should take comfort from the fact that Ryan is both a proud man and a battler and my gut feeling is that he will not give up the club’s coveted Championship status without a real fight.
He’s proved a winner in the past and may well be so again in the future.
