Billy Paynter has today become Sheffield United’s first signing of the January transfer window.
The striker has joined the League One club on loan from South Yorkshire neighbours Doncaster Rovers until the end of the season.
Paynter featured prominently in Rovers championship winning team last season, hitting 13 goals in 40 outings.
But the Liverpudlian forward has slipped down in the pecking order at the Keepmoat Stadium, with Rovers boss Paul Dickov preferring Federico Macheda, Chris Brown and Theo Robinson up front.
The 29-year-old has played 12 times for Rovers this season, scoring once. His last start came on November 26 at Charlton Athletic. He is out of contract at the end of the season.
Marcus Williams, meanwhile, has left United and penned a one-and-a-half-year deal with Scunthorpe United while Sean McGinty has joined Northampton Town on a month’s loan.
