Captain Matt Mills struck the only goal as Championship Reading claimed another notable scalp to reach the FA Cup quarter-finals for a second successive year.
Former Doncaster Rovers player Mills fired home after 26 minutes of tonight’s fifth-round tie at Everton to put the Royals, who knocked out Liverpool en route to the last eight in 2010, within a game of Wembley.
Everton, conquerors of Chelsea in the previous round and hoping for a prolonged cup run, were shocked and should have gone another goal behind moments later.
A mistake by Sylvain Distin allowed Jimmy Kebe a clear run on goal from 40 yards but Howard was alert and stood up well to block the Mali international’s shot as Reading pressed for a second goal.
Leon Osman went close to an equaliser just before the break when he headed over from a Baines header.
Meanwhile, former Chesterfield striker Ben Algar has signed a one-year contract at F.C. New York, pending USL and USSF approval. Algar, who has been training with Matlock Town, started his career as a trainee at Sheffield United Academy.
“I am so excited to be coming to New York; I just can’t wait,” said Algar.
