A LAST minute equaliser from skipper Rob Jones earned Doncaster Rovers a draw at Hartlepool.

Dean Saunders’ team had trailed through a second half penalty from former Barnsley full back Neil Austin but Jones, who had conceded the penalty, connected with David Cotterill’s cross to score the leveller.

It had been a confident start by the Rovers side, clearly buoyed by back-to-back home wins in recent weeks.

Howard headed over from a ninth minute corner.

A promising Rovers raid fizzled out when Brown’s pass to Quinn in the box made it difficult for them to do anything with the ball just short of the byline.

Woods had to punch clear from a far-post header across goal with a free-kick. Bennett tested the home keeper with a low 25-yarder after cutting in from the left.

There wasn’t much between the two sides at this stage of the game with Rovers having lost their earlier attacking edge. United finished the half on top and were playing with a lot of spirit for a side who had not won in eight games.

Bennett shot wide of the left-hand post with a snap shot from the edge of the box with virtually the last kick of the half.

Martis was given a lecture by the referee, who was having a good game, but escaped a booking.

But he was not so fortunate seconds later after he had fouled a Hartlepool player.

Rovers made a change on 65 minutes, teenager Ball - the hero of Tuesday’s win over Chesterfield - replacing Paynter.

Baldwin got in a block on Martis on the edge of the area just as the center-back was about to pull the trigger.

Jones blotted his copybook on 70 minutes when giving away a penalty.

Full-back AUSTIN made no mistake from the resulting spot kick, sending Woods the wrong way.

Rovers needed a quick response and they got the ball over the line in the 72nd minute, only to have the ‘goal’ disallowed for a foul on Flinders.

Harper, not afraid to take a shot on goal, fired just wide of the near post on the edge of the area on 79 minutes.

Husband replaced Martis on 80 minutes with Humphreys replacing Wyke at the same time.

Fighting broke out in the Rovers end between supporters and stewards and police had to quell to the disorder. Several fans were ejected from the stand by the police.

Rovers drew level on 89 minutes when JONES headed home at the far post from Cotterill’s free-kick.

A Rovers fan got over the barrier, onto the field and was quickly ejected by stewards.
