Darren Ferguson wants to sort contractual matters with certain Doncaster Rovers players sooner rather than later.

The recent trend with Rovers has mainly seen players in the final year of their contract offered fresh terms at the end of the season.

But Ferguson is keen to get business done quickly with those that he wants to keep at the club and hopes to start discussions soon.

“I think once I’ve made my mind up, I’ll recommend it,” Ferguson told the Free Press.

“We’ll have a discussion with the board and that will be it. The board have been fantastic, we’ll be having that discussion soon.

“I don’t see the need to wait.

“Also, being a player myself, I know what it’s like when you get to that last year of your contract.

“It can play on your mind a little bit.

“When it’s done and they’ve got the contract, they can relax a little bit - but not too much hopefully.

“It does take things off their mind a little bit.”

Key players Dean Furman, Kyle Bennett and Reece Wabara all turned down new deals with Rovers in the summer in order to move on.

One of the players already identified for a new deal by Ferguson is record appearance maker James Coppinger, whom the Rovers boss believes can play on for a couple of years.

He said: “With people like Copps, you know what you’re getting and there’s others as well.

“It’s not just about what they’ve done on the pitch. It’s about how they go about their training, their attitude and things like that.

“I know what I’m going to do and what I’m going to recommend to the board in terms of that.

“And hopefully we’ll get it done pretty quickly.”

Other players out of contract in the summer include Richie Wellens, Cedric Evina, Rob Jones, Nathan Tyson and Harry Forrester plus young players Jack McKay, Paul McKay and Liam Mandeville.
