I’M still finding it hard to find any positives out of the game at Reading on Saturday.
I suppose we were the better team for the last 10 minutes or so; Brian Stock got a short run out, and George Friend was again outstanding, but apart from that . . .
Neil Sullivan was recalled to the starting line-up and in the first half he made two really great saves to prevent the Royals taking the lead, but for most of the game the players just looked short on confidence.
We badly need three points to kick-start our season.
Our only worthwhile shot came on 80 minutes when James Coppinger unleashed a 25 yarder just past the post.
Reading’s opening goal was a bit farcical. From the away end it looked like Simon Church had fouled Sully, and I have not managed to see footage of the game to confirm, then the smallest man on the pitch ‘Alfie’ Le Fondre headed home unmarked to give them their first home victory of the campaign, leaving us four points adrift at the foot of the table.
But, hey, let’s be optimistic we’ve got 39 games to change it around and we can make a start this weekend with the visit of Crystal palace, who like us last season were battling to keep out of the bottom three.
The Eagles have had a good start to the season, having put three consecutive league victories, and three in the Carling Cup, but have lost two of their last three league games.
There are special ticket offers for this game - a family of four will cost only £30, whilst individual adult tickets are only £15.
We don’t get much respite as on Tuesday night we face the Tigers of Hull City at the Keepmoat. That could be a difficult game, as again they have started quite well, and have a potent strike force so will prove a challenge.
Talking of strikers, it’s good to see we have captured ‘The Beast’ Jon Parkin on a month’s loan from Cardiff City. We have been after him for a few seasons. Let’s hope he can score a few goals and be a good stop-gap whilst we await the return of Billy Sharp and Chris Brown.
Hopefully come next Friday’s column we will have got a further six points.
Could fans please book early for the Peterborough game. Please book through me only for this and the Blackpool game. Please note the Blackpool game now kicks off at 8pm.

Thanks to manager Sean O’Driscoll and chief executive Dave Morris for attending last Thursday’s Fans’ Forum at Retford. It was a very informative night.
