Jamie McCombe admits things went stale for him at Doncaster Rovers and says he will benefit from a fresh challenge.

The 32-year-old defender was released by Rovers this summer after an injury-ravaged final two years at the club.

McCombe said: “You tend to get a feel for these things. It’s something that I expected. I’ve been in and out this season.

“It’s something that I had in my mind anyway. I wanted to move on and give myself a fresh challenge.

“My first season at Doncaster went really well but obviously I was injured for a lot of my second season. Things went a little bit stale for me.

“Hopefully a fresh challenge will do me good. Sometimes a change is good, for both parties.”

McCombe was a key man during Doncaster’s promotion in 2013 but admits the last few years of his career have been tinged with frustration.

“It’s been difficult because wherever I’ve been I’ve always played,” he said.

“It’s difficult to not play games and stay focused. I’ve been focused but I’ve been a bit part player.”

He added: “I went to Huddersfield [in 2010] and got promoted but they changed their manager and I was allowed to go. I then joined Doncaster and played a lot of the time through an injury, got promoted again and then missed out on playing in the Championship.

“Doncaster then got relegated and I wasn’t really able to affect that, so it’s been really frustrating and I’ve not been able to get into a rhythm.

“But I want to thank the fans and the people that supported me at Doncaster. It’s a good club and I just hope they can improve on where they are at the moment. Hopefully they can get promoted next season.”
