Paul Dickov says he has not closed the Rovers door entirely on Stephen Bywater, despite the goalkeeper’s release from the club.

Bywater – who joined Rovers on a free transfer in January – was one of eight players not to be offered new terms by Dickov with the end of their deals approaching.

But the Rovers boss says that may not yet signal the end of the 33-year-old’s time with the club.

“We’re keeping our options open with regards to a new goalkeeper and the door isn’t entirely closed just yet on Stephen Bywater,” Dickov said.

Dean Furman and Reece Wabara were two major names that appeared on the list of players to be released.

Dickov revealed he had wanted the pair – both of whom he worked with while boss of Oldham Athletic – to stay but both expressed a desire to find a clubs at a higher level.

And he was determined to not be left waiting for a decision as he looks to build his squad for next season.

He said: “We sat down with them and spoke to their representatives and they expressed a desire to perhaps have a look a little higher.

“When we spoke to them we had to say that we respect their opinion and want them to get a club at a higher level.

“But, at the same time, considering the problems we’ve encountered in previous seasons we don’t want to be in a situation again with players who’ve been with us the previous season, not being contracted for the forthcoming season.

“They’re two fantastic kids who I’ve got a lot of time for and I spoke with them to wish them all the best and thank them for, not just their time at Doncaster, but also the relationship I’ve had with them over the last five years of management.”

Rovers yesterday announced the appointment of former Barnsley and Leicester City defender Gerry Taggart as the club’s new chief scout.

Taggart was assistant manager to Dickov during his time with Oldham and the two were former team mates at Leicester.
