THERE’S only one Rob Jones.
Except on Saturday when there will be several thousand versions of Rovers’ Captain Fantastic at the Keepmoat.
Rovers’ clash with surprise play off chasers Walsall has been designated ‘Rob Jones Day’ in celebration of the towering skipper.
As part of this, supporters have the chance to honour the player-coach by donning a Jones mask for the game.
Jones admits he is proud, if also a little embarrassed, by the honour.
“It’s a bit surreal,” he told the Star. “I’m very thankful that someone’s gone to the time and expense to create this ‘Rob Jones Day’.
“It makes me laugh.
“Nothing like this has happened to me before but I’m very thankful for those who think it’s worthy of having.
“It’ll be a fun event, and one I’m looking forward to.”
The prospect of looking to the sidelines and seeing thousands of versions of himself beaming back fills Jones will trepidation.
He said: “It’ll be a bit crazy.
“I might keep my children away from the game because it might scare them.”
Jones quickly worked his way into the hearts of Rovers supporters with a string of impressive performances in the heart of defence as well as seven important goals since his summer switch from Sheffield Wednesday.
But one person not likely to discuss his form is Jones himself who prefers to let others do the talking.
“I don’t reflect on my form to be honest,” he said.
“I like other people to decide if I’ve had a good game or bad, or if I’m on a good run.
“My form is not something I speak about openly.
“I’d talk about any of the individuals in the dressing room but not myself.
“I give myself targets at the beginning of the season, not for goals but for how I want to play.
“But those targets stay with me – my wife doesn’t even know what they are.”
Jones says he has been warmly received by supporters at his former clubs but having a day in his honour takes things to a new level.
He said: “Thankfully I’ve been at clubs with great fans.
“I was at Sheffield Wednesday last and they took to me very well, Hibs took to me very well, Grimsby as well.
“I’ve had a few who it’s been great to play in front of.
“This just adds to that – the first Rob Jones Day.
