Paul Keegan could make his first appearance in League One this season on Saturday after coming through his return to action this week.

The Irish midfielder played the whole first half of Doncaster Rovers’ Johnstone’s Paint Trophy clash with Burton Albion on Tuesday, his first competitive action since suffering a knee injury in March.

And boss Paul Dickov says Keegan should be in the squad for Saturday’s trip to Gillingham as long as he shows no negative effects from his game time earlier this week.

“I thought it was great to see him out there,” Dickov said. “Keegs was always only going to get 45 minutes.

“We spoke on Monday and said that he can do all the training in the world but the best fitness and sharpness he will get is by playing games.

“The plan initially was to let him train all this week and join in with the boys but we felt him getting 45 minutes game time was important for him.

“His knee is feeling fine. He felt a little off the pace which is only natural.

“Paul will be in the squad for Saturday as long as there is no real reaction from tonight. All the early signs are that he’ll be ok.”

Thorsten Stuckmann’s back stiffened up during the clash with Burton and Dickov opted to not risk him, sending Marko Marosi out for the second half.
