Paul Dickov has been actively avoiding the loan market this summer as he looks to build a strong team spirit at Doncaster Rovers.

There are currently no loan players at the club and Dickov says that is unlikely to change unless a ‘special’ player becomes available on a temporary deal.

“It’s something I’ve been very conscious of trying not to do,” Dickov told the Star.

“It’s purely because I’ve had a closed season and pre-season knowing exactly what we’ve got.

“Going into the week before the start of last season, I think we had eight contracted players. We didn’t have a goalkeeper so we were scraping around a bit with loans to get people in.

“The majority of the squad has been here for a while now and there’s a fantastic togetherness among them.

“I don’t want us to be a club that’s got five, six or seven loans in the squad.

“You want to keep that unity, application and, more importantly, the team spirit that we’ve got now going right through the season.”

Dickov is also keen to give the club’s young players a chance in the first team before looking to bring in new faces.

And he says potential loan signings would have to be considerably better than Rovers’ young crop for him to ponder a deal.

He said: “If a loan signing becomes available that we think is going to dramatically improve us, we’ll do it.

“But I’ve said all along I don’t want to hold our young kids back.

“They’re going to have to be a hell of a lot better than what our kids are.

“I think the signs myself, my staff and everyone at the club have seen this summer have been impressive.

“That forces my hand into not wanting to go into the loan market right now.”
