John Ryan has hinted that he does not expect Rovers’ squad to undergo major surgery this summer - whether they win promotion or not.

Rovers could be celebrating promotion to the Championship on Saturday, if they beat Notts County and either Bournemouth or Brentford fail to win.

With two thirds of the squad out of contract this summer, the game could also mark several Keepmoat Stadium farewells.

However, Ryan hopes to keep the current crop together - which could bode well for extended deals for popular loan trio Iain Hume, Dean Furman and John Lundstram.

“I see the current squad as forming the base for next season,” Ryan said.

“But we will need to add maybe four or five more quality players if we go up. Then I feel we will do very well in the Championship.

“Should we fall at the last hurdle, which is something I don’t envisage, then they will remain with us in League One and try and see us go one step better.

“If we don’t achieve automatic promotion then I am still confident we can go up through the play-offs,” he added.

“In reality we could have a nice day out at Wembley again. But I am not thinking about play-offs, just automatic promotion, like the manager and his players.”

Just seven players remain under contract at Rovers for next season: David Cotterill, James Coppinger, Rob Jones, Jamie McCombe, Billy Paynter, David Syers and James Husband.
