Never mind the last day, Doncaster Rovers’ last two seasons have virtually gone down to the last kick.
So Kyle Bennett - part of the Rovers squad that was promoted in incredible fashion at Brentford two years ago and relegated by Birmingham’s City last gasp goal last season - knows not to give up on a top six spot just yet.
Rovers face Rochdale tomorrow ten points adrift of sixth-placed Chesterfield.
“We’re not going to give up until it’s mathematically impossible,” said Bennett.
“We’ve seen stranger things happen in football so you never give up. Obviously it’s against the odds now, but we’ll still go for it.
“Things happen in football that you don’t expect, like the season we got promoted on the last game of the season. You don’t see that very often, so we’ll never give up and we’ll keep trying.”
Bennett, out of contract in the summer, scored a sensational double in the 3-2 reverse at Sheffield United on Tuesday, when the winger says Rovers showed they aren’t as bad as their 3-0 loss against Bradford suggested..
“It’s disappointing for us because we know we’re a lot better than that, we can perform a lot better individually and collectively,” he said.
“We re-grouped and put on a performance for our fans.
“We came away with nothing though, and I felt a little bit hard done by to be honest.”
