Luke McCullough is turning into one of the steals of the season, according to Paul Dickov.

The former Manchester United trainee has been a calm head on young shoulders since replacing skipper Rob Jones in defence last month.

Dickov admits that he took something of a gamble throwing the 19-year-old free transfer in at the deep end - but says the move has paid off.

“Luke’s really coming into his own now,” said Dickov.

“We knew we’d got a bit of a steal when we signed him in the summer.

“We had no qualms about putting him in, although we didn’t know if it might be a little bit too early for him.

“But he’s grown so much in the last four weeks.

“For a young kid he is so composed on the ball - and he’s a tough cookie without it.

“I thought Luke was magnificent against QPR on Saturday and I was pleased with him and Bongani [Khumalo] again on Tuesday night,” added Rovers’ boss.

“The likes of Zigic, Novak and Burn were a threat from set pieces and open play but I thought they both handled it very well.

“I thought they tried to win everything in the first half but after the break they used their brains a bit more and either went to win it or sat off and picked up the second ball.

“That really helped us get the ball back and allowed us to play.”
