Rovers are hoping to sign former England U20 striker Alex Nimely on loan from Manchester City, the Star understands.
The 19-year-old turned out as an unnamed trialist in the first game of the season for Rovers’ development squad against Mansfield Town on Tuesday.
It is understood the 22-year-old is now training with Rovers ahead of a move being rubber-stamped.
Liberia-born Nimely can play as a centre forward or on the wing, as he did against Mansfield.
Paul Dickov is looking to back up for Chris Brown and Billy Paynter as well as alternative options in attack.
He spent a month on loan with Crystal Palace last season, making one start and one substitute appearance.
He has previously has loan spells with Middlesbrough and Coventry City where he scored his only goal in senior football so far.
Nimely has made just one substitute appearance for Manchester City, coming off the bench in a Europa League clash with Juventus in 2010.
The Star also understands former France U21 international Bira Dembele was among the trialists who turned out against Mansfield.
The 19-year-old centre half spent the last two seasons with CS Sedan in Ligue 2.
Sanchez Payne – who has been on trial with Rovers all summer – has yet to sign a contract with the club.
Payne found the net in the development squad’s 2-1 defeat to Mansfield at the Keepmoat on Tuesday.
