The 23-year-old had been expected to miss the entire campaign after tearing his cruciate knee ligament in a pre-season friendly at York City.

“McCullough is way ahead of schedule,” said boss Darren Ferguson today.

“The way he is going I would expect him to be fit before the end of the season.”

He added: “You have to be careful but he looks fit and his body fat is very good and he has trained very hard.

“He’s running very well and he’s joining in now with the warm-ups.”

McCullough impressed in a defensive midfield role at the end of last season.

Jordan Houghton, who took that role in the team after joining on loan from Chelsea, suffered a similar injury to McCullough against Luton Town and is set to be ruled out for the majority of 2017.
