Louis Tomlinson would become a ‘silent partner’ to John Ryan should the pair succeed in their takeover bid, The Star understands.

The One Direction star - thought to be worth an estimated £14 million - has emerged as a key ingredient in Ryan’s audacious bid to wrestle back control of Doncaster Rovers.

Reports have suggested that Tomlinson, 22, and former chairman Ryan will become co-chairmen should their proposed deal get the green light.

However, the Bessacarr-born pop sensation is likely to take a back seat and hand Ryan the reins, which would allow him to concentrate on his multi-million pound pop career.

Ryan resigned as chairman last November in a row over Sequentia Capital’s ultimately unsuccessful takeover bid.

He initially distanced himself from the club but became a visible presence again at home games towards the back end of last season, and is understood to have been plotting a return to the Rovers boardroom for a few months.

In a notable change of tone, he moved to praise the job done by fellow majority shareholders Terry Bramall and Dick Watson only last month.

He also told The Star: “I’m still a major shareholder and you never know what’s around the corner in football. I’ll always be there or thereabouts. This is my club.”

Ryan was unavailable for comment yesterday.
