OLDHAM Athletic skipper Dean Furman is on Rovers’ radar as boss Brian Flynn aims to shore up his weakened midfield.

However, speculation suggesting a loan move has already been agreed is said to be premature.

Rovers were first linked with Furman last month but while Flynn admitted to an admiration for the South Africa international, he denied he was preparing a move.

Since then however, Flynn has seen his midfield options reduced. Paul Keegan, David Syers and Martin Woods are all injured, Lee Fowler is out on loan and Cameron Howieson this week left for international duty with New Zealand U20 for two weeks.

It is understood that midfielder Mark Wilson – who agreed non-contract terms with Rovers last week – is seen only as back up should the situation worsen further.

Flynn is keen to ensure Rovers are not short of numbers for the final promotion push and wants to act before the loan window closes in a fortnight’s time.

Target Furman is out of contract at Oldham in the summer and the strugglers are resigned to losing him.

Oldham would reportedly be open to allowing the 24-year-old to leave on loan as they have cover in central midfield and may themselves want to freshen up before the relegation run in.

An article in yesterday’s Star ‘Rovers’ increased losses from survival bid failure’ discussed a £1.6m rise in the club’s wage bill and referred to Willie McKay’s involvement with the club last season.

Mr McKay refutes any suggestion his actions led to the rise in Rovers’ wage bill. He has reaffirmed that he brought top flight players to the club on a tiny fraction of the wages they would normally demand in order to boost the club’s bid to avoid relegation and gave them a fighting chance.
