The veteran midfielder has been training with Rovers during pre-season and an impressive performance in the friendly at Rossington Main had supporters excited over a potential return for the youth team graduate.

Boss Darren Ferguson has played down talk of Rovers offering a contract to the 33-year-old but sources suggest there is strong interest in the former Republic of Ireland international within the club.

The Star understands several League One clubs are interested in signing Green, including at least one side relegated from the Championship last season.

For Green, the decision over his next destination is most likely to come down to how strong his desire is to play at the highest possible level in the twilight of his career.

Rovers would be a particularly local option for Green, who still lives in his native Pontefract.

After coming through the youth ranks at Rovers, Green went on to make 164 appearances for the club with his final game coming in the League One play-off final win over Leeds United in 2008.
