Darren Ferguson is keen for Doncaster Rovers to secure promotion as soon as possible – but admits they face a tough run-in.

Five of their remaining seven games are against sides in the top half of League Two with four still harbouring realistic ambitions of finishing in the play-off places.

Ferguson remains confident in Rovers getting over the promotion finishing line as well as going on to being crowned champions but says they cannot afford a dip in form.

“We’ve got what I feel is a really tough run in,” Ferguson said. “We’ve got six of the teams in the top half of the team to play.

“There’s three or four teams that are really fighting for the play-offs.

“What we need to concentrate on, which we’ve spoken about all season, is the level of our performance.

“It’s been very good at times. It was against Plymouth.

“The players will be reminded of that all week.”

Rovers head to 13th placed Grimsby Town on Saturday, a side whose play-off hopes look to have ended.

And Rovers could be promoted as early as this weekend provided they win and Stevenage lose at home to Barnet.

A win for Rovers coupled with a draw for Stevenage would leave them 18 points clear in the automatic promotion places with 18 left to play for.

“We need six points from a possible 21 to guarantee it,” Ferguson said.

“We have to make sure we get that as quickly as we possibly can and then the aim after that is to win the league.”
