Darren Ferguson admits he has plenty of tough decisions to make today as he prepares to shape his squad for life in League One.

The disappointed Doncaster Rovers boss says his side’s end of season slump – capped with a 2-1 defeat at Hartlepool United on Saturday – could yet influence his thoughts ahead of individually informing his players whether they remain part of his plans.

Ferguson was planning a detailed assessment of Saturday’s defeat and the previous game against Exeter City.

“The way the league has gone, the tough reflection I’ve got to have is based on two different things,” he told The Star.

“It’s the first 42 games and the last four.

“I’ve got to go away and have a good think about that.

“I’ve got to look at the games back and look at where we’ve struggled and who has struggled.

“I know exactly what I want to do on Monday morning and I have for a while.

“This is where as a manager you have to be careful about the decisions you make on Monday morning based on what I’ve seen throughout the whole season.

“I need to look at things a little bit deeper than what I thought,” he added.

“And certain players.

“I’m not questioning the character of the players. They’ve shown it all season and even in some parts of the last four games.

“The last two, I have to look at in real detail and make sure I have the composure to make the correct decisions moving forward.

“But I can’t forget the first 42 games of the season and that is what has got us promotion.”

Rovers are today set to confirm the permanent signing of Niall Mason from Aston Villa.

Mason made 42 appearances for Rovers on loan from Villa this season.

With his deal at Villa Park set to expire this summer, he has opted to make his move to Rovers a permanent one.

Matty Blair has extended his contract by a year to the summer of 2019 while Marko Marosi has penned a new two-year deal.
