DONCASTER Rovers are looking at the prospect of a “pay on the gate” turnstile for games at the Keepmoat Stadium
It is an issue that would find favour with plenty of Rovers fans and is also something being investigated by other Football League clubs despite the fact that some have, or are planning, automated entrance and gatemen-free turnstiles.
Although football supporters countrywide have now become used to - if somewhat reluctantly - buying tickets beforehand or queuing at the ticket office on matchdays (and that will always remain), there has remained a preference for the opportunity to have the old-style ‘pay-on-the-gate’ on matchday.
It is an issue Rovers fans and supporters group have brought up with the club and the club say they have listened whilst stressing that involving their fans, under the Fan Engagement banner, is a major part of the club’s strategy and they welcome feedback from supporters.
The club have assured supporter groups the possibility of a cash turnstile option, and how it would work, is something being looked at.
They have contacted League One clubs who operate a cash turnstile. Those that do so, operate it with an unallocated seating policy.
Rovers currently allocate seats in all parts of the Keepmoat and the club believe that a cash turnstile may have an impact on some season ticket holders.
They are working on processing a document covering the advantages and disadvantages of a cash turnstile.
When it is prepared, their intention then is to consult with supporters through the Rovers We Trust project.
Many clubs acknowledge attendances have been affected across the years by various aspects of all-seater requirements and the fact it is less ‘simpler’ for the casual supporter - and certainly difficult to accompany a friend or relative who may have a reserved seat with no unreserved seats available next to or around them, making it impossible to sit close by.
The cash turnstile option would not alter that but there is an increasing trend towards a cash turnstile option - along with fumbling for money or still queuing as the match is kicking off!
