Paul Dickov has threatened to get nasty - and wield the axe if necessary - to avoid a repeat of Friday’s pre-Halloween fright night on Teesside.

The furious Scot hauled his players in for extra training over the weekend following the abject 4-0 defeat at the Riverside Stadium.

Dickov’s positivity and sense of humour has shone through during what has been, in the main, a very promising return to the Championship thus far.

But the mood at Cantley Park, following Rovers’ first back-to-back league defeats of the season, could be noticeably different this week.

“If players work hard I’ll look after them. If they don’t, they’ll see a different side to me,” he said.

“We’ve got a good group but I can’t accept performances like Friday. I was embarrassed watching it at the end.

“I’ve said to the players if I have to go and get other people in, I will. If I have to make changes to the personnel, I will do that.”

Dickov was also highly critical of his side’s defending against Boro, as Rovers leaked four goals for the second successive weekend.

“They caused us problems, but we caused ourselves problems by giving the ball away in silly areas and not defending as a team,” he said.

“The four goals we conceded were really poor, and that’s taking nothing away from Middlesbrough who I thought were fantastic.

“The first goal was particularly disappointing. It was just one ball over the top. Between the goalkeeper and the defenders, you’ve got to deal with that. It’s basic stuff.

“But we’ll work this week, and put it right. We’ll get a reaction.”
