James Coppinger insists he remains 100 per cent behind Rob Jones to land the Doncaster Rovers manager’s job on a permanent basis.

The Star understands that Jones will be interviewed for the position today as Rovers prepare to make an appointment later this week.

And veteran midfielder Coppinger has maintained his support for the interim boss to be handed the reins permanently.

“I’m 100 per cent behind him and I know I’m not the only one,” Coppinger told the Star. “It’s out of our hands but we’ve tried to do our best for him.

“It wasn’t the best performance at York but after such a great performance against Barnsley, things are looking brighter.

“I think he’s done an amazing job.

“He works tirelessly, he’s got the club’s interests at heart and he’s a player’s manager.

“It was disappointing from a player’s perspective to not get a win at York but it’s one of those things.”

The competitive element of Jones’ interim spell in charge came to an end in last Tuesday’s disappointing defeat at York City in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy.

Coppinger believes Jones should not be judged merely on his last match.

He said: “It’s on what he has done when he was previously in charge and what he’s done over these last few weeks.

“It’s not just what you see on the pitch. It’s obviously disappointing when you lose games but there’s been a massive improvement on and off the pitch.

“We’ll find out this week who gets the job and we’ll go from there. We’ll react as players as we have to do.”

It is understood Darren Ferguson, Lee Clark and Shaun Derry were all due to be interviewed for the job yesterday.
