Andy Butler has been appointed as Doncaster Rovers’ new club captain.

Rovers stalwart James Coppinger remains as team captain.

But boss Darren Ferguson has been impressed by Butler’s organisational and communication skills and has decided to reward the 32-year-old defender.

“The captain is James Coppinger and I’ve never thought about changing it really,” Ferguson told The Star.

“If it’s not broke, don’t fix it. Let’s just leave it as it is.

“What I will do this season is, because we haven’t had a club captain, I will make Andy Butler the club captain with James as team captain.

“Andy has gone to a different level with how he’s organising people and how he’s talking.

“He’s definitely improving as a player, even at his age. It’s irrelevant to me that, you can always improve. He’s taking on board the responsibility.

“He’s a local lad and it makes sense to make him club captain.

“He’s now coaching with some of the younger age groups at the club which I think is important. He’s a really good example.

“I like the lad and I think he’s done well,” he added.

“Despite the fact we had the relegation, I think towards the end of last season he was one of those who showed real character and determination.

“I think there’s still improvement in him.”
