Sheffield United leapfrogged over their Sheffield Wednesday rivals this afternoon with a 2-1 win over Notts County.
United are now on 44 points from 22 games in League One, one more than Wednesday, who lost at Walsall yesterday.
The Blades are seven points behind leaders Charlton.
Irish midfielder Alan Judge had rocked the Bramall Lane crowd with a goal after 17 minutes for County, with a freak long-range free kick.
Lee Hughes, who had jumped for the ball, seemed to claim the goal at first, but the ball did not touch his head.
It was harsh on United.
Yet Ryan Flynn restored parity, the 23-year-old’s neat strike low under goalkeeper Stuart Nelson ensuring an entertaining first half finished all square. Richard Cresswell had supplied Flynn with the ammunition, on the 31st minute.
Ten minutes into the second half, Ched Evans took a quick throw-in down the left catching Notts unaware.
Stephen Quinnn squared the ball and Cresswell looked favourite to score, but the final touch came from visiting defender Alan Sheehan.
Sheehan tried everything in his power to make amends and trigger some offensive push, but United seemed relatively comfortable and Evans could have widened the gap after a surge into the penalty area forcing a last ditch save from Nelson.
Evans also hit the bottom of the left hand post with four minutes remaining.
