Former Spireites striker Kevin Davies could be close to joining Preston North End.
Davies, 36, was released by Bolton at the end of last season.
He has also been linked with a move to Burnley whose manager Sean Dyche was a teammate of Davies in the Chesterfield side of the 90s.
Davies’s form at Chesterfield earned him a £750,000 move to Southampton. He later won an international call up when Fabio Capello was England manager.
Sheffield-born Davies played as a schoolboy with Sheffield United but was released when aged 15.
