Controversial late penalty denies Tigers
Both Stocksbridge Park Steels and Sheffield FC drew a blank, while Worksop Town were denied a fourth win in five games by a last gasp Bradford equaliser.
Stocksbridge dominated for long periods against a dogged Ashton outfit. The visitors though will have been mighty relieved to come away with a point, with goalkeeper Terry Smith making excellent saves to deny Jack Muldoon, Alex Callery and Mark Ward, while both Nicky Darker and Stuart Ludlam hit the woodwork.
Sheffield had the better of the exchanges at newly promoted Rainworth Miners Welfare but came up against a goalkeeper in Mark Hales who was in top form.
Retford United picked up their first points of the season at the fifth attempt when a superb 81st minute strike from substitute Matt Booth, who had only been on the pitch a couple of minutes, earned a deserved a 1-0 win at Burscough. The game ended on a sour note when Retford's Ryan Hindley was sent off along with the home sides Gary McEvatt following an altercation.
Worksop were left ruing a controversial stoppage time penalty converted by former Tiger Kevin Sanasy that saw Bradford leave Cannon Park with a point in a entertaining 3-3 draw.
Worksop took lead on 13 minutes when Ryan Mallon scored from close ranger after a Dion Meikle shot had been parried. Peter Knox extended the advantage on 25 minutes with a powerful shot that went in off the crossbar. The visitors pulled one back through substitute Tom Greaves 11 minutes into the second half before Sanasy made it 2-2 on 77 minutes.
However, Worksop looked to have won it when substitute Ben Tomlinson fired a shot through the legs of the keeper with 10 minutes remaining. But then came the sucker punch when Bradford top grabbed a point with a hotly disputed penalty deep into time added on.
Frickley Athletic are still looking for their first win of the season after going down 3-2 at home against Marine.
Buxton came from a goal down to beat Nantwich Town 2-1 at the Silverlands. The visitors took a 27th minute lead through the prolific Michael Lennon but the Bucks were back on level terms seven minutes before the break, Kieran Lugsden putting the finish touch to a Josh Wilde lofted cross. And it was Lugsden that pounced for the winner midway through the second half rounding the keeper after latching onto a through ball.
Alfreton Town maintained their two point lead at the top of the Blues Square North after a 2-0 victory over Vauxhall Motors. Conner Franklin broke the deadlock on 57 minutes with substitute Nathan Arnold sealing victory seven minutes from time.
