Chile midfielder seals Latics switch

One player who will not be making the trip to Bramall Lane in just over 48 hours time is Jean Beausejour.

The Chile midfielder quit Birmingham City last night and joined Wigan Athletic for an undisclosed fee, agreeing a two-and-a-half-year contract with the relegation-threatened Premier League club.

The 27-year-old, who has been capped 43 times by his country and scored against Honduras in the 2010 World Cup, moved to Birmingham in the summer of 2010 from Mexican side Club America

Beausejour helped the Blues win the Carling Cup in 2011, where they beat Arsenal, and he scored against Club Brugge in the subsequent Europa League campaign.

Wigan boss Roberto Martinez admitted: “Jean is a player we have been tracking for a long time. Now Jean has 18 months of experience in the British game and his dynamism, technical ability and tactical concepts will bring a different dimension into our squad. He is ready to bring his own experience and his energy into the fantastic challenge that as a football club we’re facing in the next 16 games of the season.”

Following the sale of Beausejour, Birmingham manager Chris Hughton is believed to be interested in signing Republic of Ireland international Simon Cox from West Bromwich Albion on a temporary basis. Cox is predominantly a striker.
