Trotman signs on for 18-months

Chesterfield: Spireites news, reports and more.

Spireites have secured the services of central defender Neal Trotman until the end of next season.

The big 24-year-old has been on loan from Rochdale and the conversion of that deal into a permanent one was always expected. After a slow start, Trotman has grown in stature since being awarded the captain’s armband on Boxing Day.

The switch sees Dean Holden, lent to Rochdale, also make his deal a permanent one though only to the end of this season.

John Sheridan is expected to make at least two more signings ahead of Exeter City’s visit to the B2net on Saturday. The manager, as always, remains tight lipped about his targets but it’s understood that Scunthorpe United defender Michael Nelson is one of them.

Nelson, 31, came into league football with Bury before playing for Hartlepool during Chris Turner’s time in the North East. Before moving to Glandford Park, he had a spell with Norwich City.

Exeter have extended the loan deal of Reading winger Jake Taylor but fellow wide man Chris Hackett has returned to parent club Millwall.

City boss Paul Tisdale, who favours a 4-3-3 formation, said it’s unlikely he will even be able to add new faces to his struggling squad.

He said: “I would like to but it won’t be possible unless other players leave and we raise money that way. There will be no chance of me spending unless we get a fee for a player we have now.

“I always like to get new players in if they are going to improve the team, but it’s unlikely we will be able to afford it.”
