Spireites are hoping to complete their warm up fixtures with a home game against top level overseas opposition on August 2.
Chief Executive Chris Turner said: “We’re close to an agreement for a top flight European team to come to the Proact Stadium on the last Saturday before the season starts.”
Aston Villa are already booked to come on Wednesday July 30, ironically as part of the deal involving Jordan Bowery’s move to the West Midlands. Bowery has, of course, subsequently joined Rot her ham United.
Manager Paul Cook has confirmed he’s had chats with midfielder John-Joe O’Toole plus strikers Michael Higdon and Jon Parkin. “I only want to sign players that will improve the squad or offer us a different option and only at the right money.
“I’m always interested in good players but I’m not prepared to overpay. There’s no point in bringing in experienced players that aren’t good enough to get in to our team and I’d certainly rather have a squad of 18 good players than 25 of which half a dozen of them will never get beyond the bench.”
Cook concluded: “We need quality and that costs, but sometimes agents can be unrealistic. You have to keep these guys happy but very often it complicates potential deals if they get too greedy and too unrealistic.”
