Spireites set for last year at Saltergate

The publication of the fixtures this week has begun to concentrate the mind on what will be Chesterfield's final season at Saltergate.

Bournemouth are the last scheduled visitors to Spireites' home since 1871 and, with work due to start imminently on the new stadium on Whittington Moor, manager John Sheridan said that the club's plans played a major part in his interest in the job.

"It's exciting times here and that's what appealed to me," he said.

"Going into a new stadium is great and if we can go into it having got out of this division it'll be great. But that's in the future, everyone's looking forward to it, me more than anyone, but we need to concentrate on where we are at this time.

"We're at Saltergate for this season and we need to do the best we can while we're here and it'll be even better if we can leave here on a high note.

"Lots of people have been coming here for many years and if we can get out of the division and and start in a new division in a new stadium, all the better."

One issue set to be resolved next week is the future of defender Gregor Robertson.

The former Millers left back, who is out of contract at the end of June, was offered a new deal ahead of Sheridan's recruitment and his intentions whether to accept or try his luck elsewhere are expected in the next few days.
