Spireites chief backs Sheridan
Chesterfield: Spireites news, reports and more.
MAJORITY shareholder Dave Allen reiterated his support for Chesterfield manager John Sheridian at the club’s agm.
Despite the team’s lowly position, Allen said: “John Sheridan is no fool. It was my ambition to see this club reach the Championship playing attractive, attacking football and John Sheridan is the man to take us there.”
But he added: “We didn’t work hard enough in the summer. If you’re late at the table, all you get is the crumbs. I’ve brought in Chris Turner to help with that.
He’s able to identify good players. At Wednesday he brought in Chris Brunt for nothing and Glenn Whelan for nothing and sold them for big money. Then there was Grant Holt and Madjid Bougherra.”
Sheridan answered criticism over not retaining Craig Davies and Deane Smalley. He said: “Getting rid of any player after a successful season is always difficult.
“I wanted to bring in better players. I tried really hard but things didn’t really happen. We had players here, made them very good offers.
“There were several players from the Championship. But they didn’t come; their decision.
“Some of the players that were here last season haven’t shown what I’d hoped.”
