Spireites aim for spirit of '66 to beat cup rivals
CHESTERFIELD have been drawn against Scunthorpe United in the League Cup for the third time in the competition's history and John Sheridan's men will be hoping to make it a hat-trick of victories.
The first meeting was back in 1966 just a few weeks after England's World Cup triumph and Ivan Hollett bagged a brace as Chesterfield won 2-1.
In 1972, the first round tie ended goalless before Spireites romped to a 5-0 replay win in front of a Saltergate crowd of 8,288.
Scunthorpe, who host the tie at Glanford Park, won promotion to The Championship by beating Millwall in the Play-off final at Wembley. It made it an immediate return for the side who were relegated from the Championship a year earlier.
Meanwhile, members of Chesterfield Football Supporters Society voted overwhelmingly to allow the sale of up to 225,000 of the shares they hold in the football club to raise funds to be invested in the Community Stand at the proposed stadium development at Whittington Moor.
94 per cent of members favoured the sale.
CFSS will retain a place on the club board and will keep in excess of 6,000 shares.
