CHESTERFIELD fans’ minds are, momentarily at least, focused on a Johnstone’s Paint Trophy Final at Wembley in March after victory over Oldham on Monday.
The game, against Barnet or Swindon Town who play their second leg next Tuesday at The County Ground, with the tie evenly poised at 1-1, will take place on Sunday March 25, meaning Chesterfield’s trip to Bramall Lane will have to be rescheduled.
Chesterfield manager John Sheridan, a former Wembley goal hero himself with Sheffield Wednesday, said: “It’s brilliant for everyone involved with the club. Obviously we’ll be trying to win the final, but I’ve told the lads to enjoy the occasion because getting to any Wembley final is a great achievement.
“We worked our socks off against a very good Oldham side, one of the best footballing sides in the division, who we knew would create chances. They put us under pressure, but we defended really well, we blocked shots and were always dangerous on the break and created a few good chances of our own.”
He added: “I’m really proud of all the players. Our league form has improved over the last seven or eight games after a poor run and we’ve carried that into the cups. Our league position still isn’t good, but the lads have been showing character and belief.
“We’ll all enjoy it for the time being.”
Chesterfield have signed Peterborough United striker Nicky Ajose on loan until the end of the season. Ajose joined Posh from Manchester United last summer for a transfer fee believed to be in the region of £300,000.
He bagged 13 goals in 28 league appearances in a loan spell at Bury last season.
